Assistant Professor with the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies (FHIS) at the University of British Columbia.

In her role of Educational Leadership, Caroline is dedicated to enhancing the teaching and learning experience of the undergraduate students by focusing on inclusive and experiential teaching practices in the courses she is teaching (FREN 101, FREN 101, FREN 201, FREN 202, FREN 301, FREN 302, FREN 395 Abroad, FREN 420 Abroad).

Her impact goes beyond teaching in her several funded projects (Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund, Students as Partners Fund, Centre for Community-Engaged Learning’s Global Fund) geared towards creating a new French placement test for incoming students at FHIS and towards enhancing inclusive teaching practices. She is also coordinator of the Teaching and Learning FHIS Seminar where her impact is shared among colleagues of UBC Faculty of Arts.

She is also the Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization representative for the Association des Professeur·e·s de Français des Universités et Collèges Canadien·ne·s (APFUCC) and a past-member of the UBC Green College Leading Scholars program within the group “Truth and Imagination”.

Author and developer

Shreya is a UBC graduate with a major in Mathematics and a minor in French. During his time as a student, he held several community-focused leadership roles, including Senior Residence Advisor, where he helped foster community among first-year students, and Senior Student Ambassador, where he worked closely with students across campus to welcome prospective students.

Through these experiences, Shreya developed a strong appreciation for creating inclusive and supportive spaces, an approach that continues to shape his work.

As a student, Shreya initially felt hesitant about studying French because of the language’s highly gendered nature. His perspective shifted after reaching out to a professor, who introduced him to resources on gender-inclusive French. Discovering these resources deepened his connection to the language and inspired him to become involved in creating more inclusive learning materials. Since then, Shreya has collaborated with Savindya and Professor Caroline to develop resources that support gender-inclusive language learning. His lived experiences bring authenticity to these projects and continue to inform his commitment to inclusion and accessibility in education.

Illustrator and designer

Savindya is the illustrator and developer behind Le Voyage d’Alex, where they bring the comic’s visual world and digital experience to life. Through a combination of illustration and web development, they translate complex ideas around gender-inclusive French into an engaging, accessible format.

Savindya recently graduated from the University of British Columbia with a degree in History and Economics, an interdisciplinary background that informs their approach to storytelling, design, and education. During their time at UBC, they were the founding President of the Sri Lankan Student Association, where they built community and created spaces for cultural connection and representation on campus.

In addition to their work on this project, Savindya is the author and developer of this website and the host of The Talking Stage on CiTR Radio, where they explore conversations around culture, identity, and community. Across their work, they are driven by a commitment to creativity, accessibility, and creating platforms that amplify diverse voices.

Community Partner

Ingrid Broussillon  served as our community partner through the Global Fund in collaboration with CCEL, playing a pivotal role in bridging our project with real-world impact. Working closely together, we developed and delivered workshops focused on fostering allyship and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), using our comic as an engaging and accessible teaching tool.

Ingrid led these workshops with expertise and care, creating thoughtful spaces for dialogue, reflection, and learning. Her leadership and commitment were instrumental in bringing our vision to life and ensuring the workshops resonated meaningfully with participants.

Further, she is an award-winning entrepreneur, workshop facilitator, and storyteller from Guadeloupe. She is the founder of The WoW Culture and Griottes Polyglottes, two organizations using improv, theatre, and storytelling to build confidence, foster empathy, curiosity and inclusion, to ultimately drive social change. What started as a personal quest to overcome language barriers and stage fright as a newcomer to Canada, became a mission to transform workplaces, communities and classrooms into safe, joyful spaces for learning, connection, and belonging.

A strong believer that “a good laugh can build bridges,” Ingrid brings people together through her favourite improv principle:  “Let’s make each other look good.”

Because when we lift each other up, we all rise.
